idea of a precious crystal doesn’t seem so New
Age when you consider it. Browse through En Visions
crystals to see what you can learn. Soy Candles: Wonder
why you’d want to burn soy candles instead of
the usual wax or paraffin ones? Buying or selling
soy products helps American soybean farmers. When
soy candles represent 10% of the existing candle market,
American farmers will sell an additional 55 million
pounds of soybeans to meet the demand. Since paraffin
wax is a petroleum derivative, using soy candles can
reduce American’s dependence on oil imports.
If environmental reasons don’t sway you, soy
candles have esthetic
attributes as well. Soy candles burn
evenly all the way to the bottom. When compared to
traditional candles, scented soy candles throw a stronger
scent and have a lower melting point, so they burn
cooler.
Wind Chimes: What do Donald Trump, Prince Charles
and Madonna have in common? They all use the ancient
Chinese art of Feng Shui to help bring harmony and
good fortune to their lives. Feng Shui literally translates
to mean wind and water. It seeks a harmonious balance
of the elements and energies in a given space to bring
the good life to those who live there. Ask Mimi how
to use the windchimes and Feng Shui mirrors she stocks
in En Visions to activate positive energy or transform
negative energy.
Incense: Would you want to burn white sage, frankincense
or myrrh incense? Are you ready to burn bay leaf incense?
Sandalwood is a common incense ingredient –
but, why? Why would you want to burn incense at all?
Since ancient times, people burned incense to disinfect
living spaces and sick beds, to influence dreaming
and to support intellectual or emotional experiences.
The smoke from incense contains psychoactive, physical
and emotionally effective substances, so it stimulates
your senses in many ways. Explore the variety of incense
at En Visions to satisfy your curiosity and stimulate
your ideas.
Aromatherapy Oils: Aromatherapy is the use of volatile
plant oils, including essential oils, for psychological
and physical well-being. The origins of aromatherapy
date back thousands of years. For example, cinnamon
treated constipation, exhaustion, flatulence, lice,
low blood pressure, rheumatism, scabies and stress.
If your mother rubbed mentholated rub on your chest
and neck when you were a child, she was using a form
of aromatherapy. Browse through the aromatherapy available
in En Visions. Which scent would enhance your day?
However, enough about the products. En Visions presents
a broader product range than most New Age shops by
showcasing local art. Mimi’s eclectic taste
and eye for design layout provide an eye-pleasing
variety including works such as:
- Photography by May Lattanzio
- Mermaids by Kay Stewart
- Basketry by Emily Warnberg and Cindy Middleton
- pressed flower cards by Candace Graham
- Abstract paintings by Melissa Arrant, Kenneth Albright,
Tiffany Pippin and Jim Davis
- Animals in watercolor by Don Taylor
- Realistic and impressionistic paintings by Bill
Valle
Mimi also hosts the Thursday evening meetings of the
Panama City Reiki Share Group.
What is Reiki, you ask? “Reiki”
is a Japanese word meaning universal life force energy
or spiritually guided life force energy.
“REI” means universal consciousness, spiritual
consciousness or wisdom that knows the cause of all
problems and what to do to heal them.
“Ki” means vital life force energy, which
enlivens everything.
|
|
|
In English, the noun Reiki commonly refers to either
the energy or the therapeutic method, which uses the
energy. “Reiki” is also used as a verb and
an adjective. Reiki is described as a holistic therapy
which brings about healing on physical, mental, emotional
and spiritual levels. People who are experiencing illness,
major life changes, stress or anxiety can participate
in a Reiki session to find peace and tranquility in
Reiki’s subtle effect. Talk to Mimi about the
share group. She can provide you with serious ideas
to consider.
On July 21, 2007, Mimi will host the first art class
at En Visions. Alice Cappa, fabric artist and weaver,
will teach Triangle Weaving. Alice weaves cotton and
wool shawls and clothing that are very delicate. One
of her trademarks is her fine attention to color. Alice
uses Shetland, Cheviot and Florida Native fleeces in
whites, naturals and dyed shades. She raises her own
sheep organically and washes the wool without chemicals,
retaining some of the natural lanolin. The result is
wool soft enough to wear next to the skin (barring allergies).
Class participants will create a triangular frame, apply
simple weaving techniques and complete a woven yarn
project, all within a few hours. The technique results
in a full-size shawl, a textured, pillow cover or even
a tote. Alice Cappa has been teaching students in Thomasville
and Tallahassee since 1981. Call En Visions at (850)
215-3401 to inquire or sign up.
En Visions held their grand opening at 231 Harrison
Avenue, Downtown Panama City on July 10, 2007 with a
formal Chamber of Commerce ribbon cutting ceremony.
When asked why she decided to open En Visions, Mimi
says she kept hearing that Panama City needed a good
New Age shop. Like Tammy, Mimi has discovered a specific
niche and filled it perfectly.
Whether you decide on a cup of coffee and a sweet treat
in Tammy’s Downtown Café or browse through
the enticing merchandise and art in En Visions, you’ll
enjoy the art venues and the associated esthetic pleasures
this destination provides. Enjoy! |

Art
Venues: The Latest Destination Downtown
By Rebecca Valle
What’s the newest art venue in Downtown
Panama City? Surprise, surprise – it’s
Tammy's Downtown Café and the En Visions
shopping gallery.
You wonder what a café and store have
to do with art? Lean in, and let me tell you
a secret that you’ll definitely want to
know. Tammy’s has art, music and atmosphere.
En Visions has art, music, Reiki and art classes.
Both places have quiet corners for creative
endeavors and a warm welcome for artists and
art aficionados. If that’s not an art
venue, I don’t know what is. Tammy's Downtown
Café, at 229 Harrison Ave, opened July
1, 2007 in the former Java Bar location. Family
owned and operated by Tammy and Ray Rousseau,
the new enterprise boasts a re-painted interior
and a redecorated courtyard, new paintings and
an updated plushy, comfy, elegant-without-being-stuffy
lounge area. Free Wi-Fi Internet access in the
café and courtyard are pluses, as are
the contrasting surprises of television, chess
and board games.
You’ll find the tranquility of the courtyard
a welcome break in your routine. Read a book
and sip a latte. Bring a notebook or a sketchbook
and invite your
muse to
join you in the inspiring atmosphere.
Tammy’s offers light dining, espresso,
fine coffees and teas. Don’t bypass
the extraordinary delicacies baked in house
by Elizabeth, the charming English transplant.
Go early or stay late – Tammy’s
is open 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., Monday through
Saturday.
Stroll into Tammy’s and relax over a
classic latte or a fruit smoothie with a gourmet
sandwich or homemade soup. Or have a panini
and frappe. The menu, which includes deli
sandwiches, homemade desserts and gourmet
coffee, is varied enough for anyone’s
taste. Professional event catering is also
offered.
On July
7, Tammy’s and En Visions presented
the Brobdingnagian Bards, an original Celtic
Renaissance music duo from Austin, Texas.
(They wear kilts). The Bards combine Scottish
and Irish folk songs with the Lord of the
Rings music (and kilts). Their instruments
include the autoharp, recorder and the mandolin.
(Did I mention the kilts? Lo-o-ove the kilts.)
View www.thebards.net for more information.
On August 19, Tammy’s will host the
Bay Artists, Actors and Musicians Organization,
Inc. (BAAMO) as they present “BAAMO
All Stars,” a non-profit fundraiser.
Performers will include Steve Wilkerson and
Friends, Broadway Showstoppers, Scott Wetter
Band, Slap Ruthie and a host of others. Zan
Miller and Marty Holley will display art during
event. Tickets are on sale at Tammy’s
and from BAAMO members. Call BAAMO at 769-2263
or Tammy’s at 215-5225 for more information.
Every Friday night Lucky Mud plays in the
courtyard starting at 7:30. A Lucky Mud show
provides folk, blues, Celtic, honky-tonk,
cowboy yodels and a little rock and roll.
Lucky Mud’s Michael McKinney provides
vocals and guitar. And, Maggie McKinney lends
her vocals, guitar, mandolin and bodhran to
the music for tight harmonies on the strong,
original lyrics. Focus on the lyrics so you
don’t miss the impromptu lyrics that
Maggie

and Mike
insert in their performances.
The name Lucky Mud comes from a Kurt Vonnegut,
Jr. novel called Cat's Cradle in which a character
says, “In the beginning, God created
Mud and some of it was Lucky Mud. It got to
get up and look around at all the other mud.”
More information about the band is available
at www.luckymudmusic.com.
Martin Hammond plays Saturday nights, beginning
at 6:30 p.m. His easy-listening music and
all your favorite Oldies offer an ideal way
to wind down over the weekend. He draws from
the styles of artists such as James Taylor
and the Eagles, with his songs taking you
back to a place you remember deep inside,
a place full of warm memories. His varied
repertoire ensures you’ll hear some
of your favorites throughout the evening
Many local business people, especially those
who work in the downtown area, have found
that that the lounge, the café tables
and the courtyard provide alternate meeting
locations with ambience that the boardroom
just can’t provide. Add that ambience
to the convenience of coffee and Elizabeth’s
baked goods – you’ll want all
your meetings at Tammy’s. No need for
reservations unless you want an exclusive
reservation. In that case, telephone Tammy’s
at (850) 215-5225.
Tammy’s is still a work in progress.
A desktop computer is slated for immediate
installation, so Tammy’s will soon be
a true internet café. Tammy and Ray
say that they hope to add open mic nights
and poetry readings in the near-term. Long-term
plans include a regular Sunday brunch with
a pianist or ensemble for background music.
Tammy has found a niche in Downtown Panama
City and filled it perfectly. Tammy’s
Downtown Café provides a business-friendly
place for professionals and a family-friendly
place for their families. It also provides
a place for dreamers to sit and dream and
a place for lovers to dawdle over coffee and
enjoy their true love’s company. Art,
music and atmosphere: what more could you
want?
Curiosities and stimulation? Take the stairs
in Tammy’s courtyard up to the En Visions
shopping gallery. Mimi Eichholz will greet
you mere seconds after the doorbell jingles.
If happiness is providing a warm welcome,
Mimi has the territory covered.
Her motto “Gifts for the New Age”
describes the merchandise you’ll find:
handcrafted jewelry, crystals, minerals, incense,
world music CD's, windchimes, soy candles
and aromatherapy oils. New Age products may
be a new concept for you. Consider crystals,
soy candles, wind chimes, incense or aromatherapy
individually.
Crystals: Want to know whether you need a
rose quartz, a black tourmaline, or blue lace
agate to begin exploring crystal applications?
Ask Mimi – she’ll give you the
information you need to make your best choice.
From ancient times, crystal objects were used
as amulets and talismans. If crystals seem
a little too New Age, review the use of crystals
and stones throughout history. For example,
in ancient Israel twelve stones – one
for each of the twelve tribes – were
placed on the breastplate of the high priest.
Later, gemstones were identified with the
signs of the zodiac. Today, we assign birthstones
to each birth month. Religion, astrology,
birth month designation – the
