One on One Participants Receive Baby’s
First Book
From GFWC Gulf Coast Woman’s Club
The GFWC Gulf Coast Woman’s Club, Education Department
has donated books to new One on One mothers to read to their
babies. Each book is packaged in a hand-painted canvas bag which
also contains information about the importance of reading to
children at an early age. To quote Christy Williamson, 2001
Bay County Teacher of the Year, “It is my firm belief
that daily reading to a child makes the difference in success
vs. struggle.” She further adds, “It opens the brain
to rich language and conversation between a child and parent.”
In addition to a library card application and a letter from
Ms Williamson, the packet also contains an article from the
National Association for the Education of Young Children with
some tips for families who want to help their children make
connections between meaning and words and a list of age appropriate
books. A “Storytimes” schedule from the Bay County
Public Library is placed in the packet to encourage mothers
to make frequent trips to the library so their children can
become acquainted with books at an early age.
